Vernor’s Commission!
Vernor’s Reimagined: Detroit Heritage in Flight
Created for the 160th Anniversary of Vernor’s Ginger Ale and exhibited at Eastern Market in Detroit, these two hand-painted works reimagine the beloved Vernor’s gnome for a new generation while honoring one of Michigan’s most iconic brands. Using two old damaged signs, I combined elements from multiple historic designs and transformed the familiar gnome into a contemporary Detroit character. Outfitted in a Carhartt jacket, knit cap, and Air Force One sneakers, he bridges the city’s industrial past and present while maintaining the playful spirit that has made him a regional icon for generations.
Replacing the traditional barrel with a steampunk inspired flying machine, the gnome becomes a symbol of Detroit’s ingenuity, manufacturing legacy and culture of innovation. The mechanical craft references the city’s deep connections to engineering, industry and invention, while the glowing Detroit skyline below celebrates the resilience and beauty of the Motor City. I wanted to evoke the energy of classic advertising art while introducing a fresh visual language rooted in contemporary Detroit.

Mural for Plaza Antiques and Collectibles.
A commission that took me the summer of 2024 to complete. This was a historical piece made for the lobby of Plaza Antiques and Collectibles in Lincoln Park. Keeth Hays the owner and I put a lot of brain power together on the composition, subject matter and design. I painted it on three pieces of medium density overlay with reinforced 2x4s that helped the whole thing fit together perfectly in the spot it was designated for. We have featured here Rosa Parks at center, Chief Pontiac in upper left, Wayne Kramer of the MC5 in lower left, Henry Ford in upper right and Joe Louis in lower right. Up top we have the B24 Liberators made in Willow Run during WWII, the Renaissance Center, the old Seven Sisters and the newly renovated Detroit Train Station. The motif of wheat sheaves is from a Ford Flour bag of the war ration years of the 1940s.
